The Nativity Movie is getting a lot of press these days. Reports from Chicago suggest that they are reticent about showing it because they don’t want to offend anybody. Here in South Florida, people I’ve talked to are excited about seeing the movie. A group from our church will be going to see it soon. I plan to see it as well. I’ll share my thoughts about it in the January issue. It’s all about the money and how and where it flows. What about Jesus? Where does he fit in all this?

Joseph’s perspective seems to indicate the focus here should be, about integrity and respect. Matthew 1:18 -19 tells us “This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.”

Joseph could have surmised he had two options; divorce Mary quietly or have her stoned. Unbeknownst to him at the time was a third option, marry her which is what God had in mind. When we are sensitive to the promptings of and obedient to the Holy Spirit, God reveals to us that we may have more options than we think. Decisions that affect the lives of others require Godly counsel.

Joseph faced a unique challenge after finding out Mary was pregnant. Cognizant of the fact that taking her as his wife could be demeaning, he opted for marriage. Four redeeming qualities are reflected here: (1). Righteousness (1:19), discretion and sensitivity (1:19), (3) responsiveness to God (1:24), and self discipline (1:25).

As we begin this time of celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, let me challenge you to reflect upon this scripture from 2 Thessalonians 3:13 “ And as for you brothers, never tire of doing what is right.” Remember, Jesus is the reason for the season. Amen.
